1+1 House

The project proposal stems from the clients’ intention to expand their current home, located on the first floor of a family building, by occupying the unused ground floor. The aim is to integrate both floors, avoiding the current perception of two independent dwellings and minimizing the impact on the existing home.

One of the key project decisions has been the recovery of the existing patio, currently neglected, as a structuring element of the renovation. All main spaces on the ground floor are organized around this patio, seeking light and promoting interior-exterior spatial continuity. This continuity is progressively graduated, moving from the interior to a covered outdoor space, and finally accessing the patio.

Another important decision has been the transformation of the home’s access points. Currently, the dwellings have independent entrances. The aim is to unify them, by setting them back in the facade, while proposing a newly designed, much more open and lightweight staircase that collects the uses on the ground floor and seeks to establish greater spatial continuity between floors.

Regarding materiality, a play of volumes is proposed, differentiating both floors. A dark stone plinth envelops the closed program of the ground floor, with the rest of the ground floor spaces open. On the contrary, the upper volume is covered in white, pursuing a play of shadows on the facade and greater luminosity in the patio.
